The Pen

Nûn. By the Pen and what it writes down line by line.

By the Blessing of your Lord, you are not mad.

And most surely, for you will be an inexhaustible reward.

And most surely you are on a high level of morality.

So you shall soon see, and they too shall see,

which of you is the demented (perplexed)?

Surely your Lord, He best knows him who has gone astray from His Way, and He also best knows those who have returned (their spirits to Allah).

Therefore, do not obey those who belie.

They wished (asked) that you should be lenient so they too would be lenient.

And do not obey any of those who swear much in vainness,

constantly looking for flaws, as well as gossipers,

constantly hindering the good, the sinful who exceed the limits (do not obey them),

(Do not obey) to those tyrants who harm, besides all that, the sinful who eat forbidden things,

even if they have property and sons.

When Our Verses were recited to him, he said: “The tales of the men of old”.

Soon We will brand him on his nose.

Surely, We have afflicted them, as We have afflicted the gardeners who swore that they would harvest their crops early in the morning (without showing them to the poor).

And they are (and their sons) not making any exceptions.

But there passed by on it (the garden) a disaster by your Lord while they were sleeping.

So it (the crop) turned black (the garden turned to a barren land).

Finally they called out to each other at daybreak.

"If you collect, go to your field early in the morning!"

So they left (the house), whispering to one another:

"Do not allow anyone poor enter there (the garden) today next to you".

And they went early in the morning, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor) from entering.

But when they saw it (the condition of the garden) they said: “Most surely we are the people who are in Darkness”.

Nay! Indeed we are deprived people.

The one who could think most reasonably said: “Did I not tell you that if you do not glorify (Allah) that would not be (that you have to glorify)?

They said: “Pure is our Lord, surely We have become tyrant people”.

Then they replied to each other, blaming one another.

Woe to us, surely we have become the people who exceeded the limit.

It is hoped that our Lord will give us better than this instead. Surely we are the ones who desire our Lord.

This is how the torment is (in worldly life), certainly the Torment of the Hereafter is greater, did they but know!

Surely for the owners takwa (spiritual armor) there are Naîm paradises.

Just like that, Do We equate the submitted ones (Muslims) with the sinners?

What is the matter with you? How do you judge?

Or do you have a Book from which you acquire knowledge?

What you like and choose in it (that book) are surely yours?

Or do you have oaths from Us, all the way to the Day of Resurrection that ‘yours is what you decided?

Ask them “which of them is the guaranteer of this?

Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they are the truthful.

On the Day when all the truth shall come out openly, they shall be called to bow down but they shall not be able (to do so).

An abasement covers them as their eyes fear with dread. They were called to bow down while they were well.

So leave Me the people who belied this Word. We soon will lead them slowly (to the torment) from whence they do not perceive.

And I am giving them time. Surely My trap is mighty.

Or is it that you ask them a payment, and they are heavily burdened with debt?

Or that the Unseen (the unknown worlds) is near them, and they already write?

So wait patiently for the Judgment of your Lord, and be not like the owner of the Fish (like Jonah). He had cried out (to his Lord) while he was in deep sorrow.

Had not a Blessing from his Lord reached him, he would certainly have been cast down upon the wilderness while he was blamed.

But his Lord chose him, and made him of the righteous ones.

And those who deny almost knock you down to the ground with their eyes when they hear the Dhikr (the Qur’ân) and they say: “Most surely he is indeed mad”.

And it (the Qur’an) is nothing else but a Dhikr (Reminder) for the Worlds.

68:1
